What To Look For

Rat Control Regulations and Guidelines

Rodenticide Use

Burrows: Holes in ground 2 to 4 inches in diameter at the opening.

Runways: A path worn in the grass or close to walls, fences, and beside walks.

Tracks: Tracks in mud, dust, fresh dirt, or snow. Approximately ½ inch across with 5 toe prints.

Droppings: Blunt to slightly tapered on each end 3/8 to 3/4 inches long, 1/4 inch across

Where to look for burrows and runways

Burrows will generally be close to the food source and next to structures. Check sheds, woodpiles, compost bins, fences, debris piles, decks, sidewalks, patio slabs, and under shrubbery.

Open or damaged windows, doors, openings around pipes or wires not sealed to the wall, dryer vents, defective grills to crawl spaces, spaces between foundations and floors, any holes in walls above or below grade, and sewer lines. Rats only need ½ inch opening to gain entrance into structures.

Food Sources

Rats are attracted to seed spillage from bird feeders, dog food and dog droppings, stored food and seed, fallen fruit, garden vegetables, discarded foods, garbage and recycling bins, compost piles, and natural fruits such as mulberries, black cherries, crabapples, apples, pears, etc

Bird Feeder Recommendation:
Reduce seed spillage by using a catch tray under the feeder.

Identification of Rodent Droppings:

Norway Rat--About 3/8 to 3/4 inch long, and 1/4 inch thick. House Mouse--1/4 inch long and without ridges
