  Montgomery County Conservation Corps

Montgomery County Conservation Corps
affiliated with AMERICORPS and the
Woodland Job Corps Center

Founded in 1984, the Montgomery County Conservation Corps (MCCC) of Montgomery County,
Maryland seeks to improve the employment prospects and responsible citizenship of out-of-school and unemployed youth between 17 and 25 years old; as well as to help preserve Montgomery County's natural and historic resources. The MCCC operates under the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Resources.

The Corps provides its training participants (referred to as corpsmembers) with career skills in conservation, carpentry, wood, working, and landscaping. Corpsmembers ear from $5.15 to $6.50 per hour and may receive a certificate of basic training after six months or a certificate of advanced training after one year. Senior Crew Leaders can earn up to $9.20 per hour.

In addition to job skills and on-the-job training, corpsmembers will participate in six to nine hours per week of academic development that includes GED preparation and basic computer training.

After successfully completing a 30-day trial, corpsmembers may join the AMERICORPS EDUCATIONAL AWARD program whereby they can earn after 900 hour or 1700 hours $2,350 and $4,725 respectively in educational grants for tuition to any accredited college or trade school. The educational grants may be used up to seven years after completion of the MCCC program. Additionally, corpsmembers may co-enroll in the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel, Maryland, after a 45-day probationary period. Corpsmembers continue to train at the MCCC Wheaton location, but receive an array of additional financial and health benefits from Job Corps.
