Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Community Support Network contracts Respite Services of Montgomery County to manage the list of approved providers, applications submitted by individuals and families, and access to services this program.
What is Respite?
Respite is temporary relief and support families who provide on-going care to frail elderly persons, children and adults with developmental disabilities, and/or children with severe medical or behavioral needs. Respite is provided on a short-term, periodic basis, providing the family with a break from continuous care giving.
How does Repite work?
Montgomery County recognized the need caregivers have for respite and developed a consortium of over thirty agencies throughout the County. Respite Services of Montgomery County connects families to agencies and/or independent respite care providers who meet the specific needs of their family member.
Who can access respite?
Any Montgomery County resident who is caring for a family member who is frail, elderly, or has a disability may apply.
How does someone apply?
Call Respite Services of Montgomery County at 301-816-9647 for an application. Once the application is completed and returned to Respite Services of Montgomery County, staff will work with the family to locate the most appropriate provider.
Is financial assistance available?
Financial subsidies are available for qualified individuals. Individuals are encouraged to apply for subsidies.
What is the Potomac Respite House?
In addition to providing funds for linkages to independent respite providers, Montgomery County also funds a respite house. This house, which is located in Potomac, operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The house is wheelchair accessible and is staffed according to the needs of the individuals who are staying there. Individuals of any age who have a developmental disability can use the respite house. Services provided at the respite house include 24 hour supervision; meal preparation, including the ability to accommodate different dietary needs; assistance with personal care, including bathing, dressing, and feeding; medication administration; transportation to day programs or schools if needed; and opportunities for social and recreational activities. The respite house can accommodate up to three individuals at any given time and families can use up to a week of respite at a time. Reservations for care at the respite house can be made by contacting Respite Services of Montgomery County.
