Under partnership agreements with the Air Force Aid Society, Army Emergency Relief, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, and Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, the American Red Cross provides quality, reliable financial assistance to eligible applicants. Types of assistance include financial assistance for emergency travel, burial of a loved one, assistance to avoid privation, etc. The Casualty Travel Assistance Program (CTAP) provides travel assistance for two immediate family members to attend a memorial or funeral service for a service member killed on active duty in the combat zone and to travel to the bedside of a service member wounded in the combat zone.

VA burial allowances are partial reimbursement of an eligible veteran's burial and funeral costs. When the cause of death is not service related, the reimbursements are generally described as two payments: (1) a burial and funeral expense allowance, and (2) a plot or interment allowance. Individuals must complete VA Form 21-530, Application for Burial Benefits, when applying.

The Department of Veterans Affairs furnishes upon request, at no charge to the applicant, a Government headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any deceased eligible veteran in any cemetery around the world, regardless of their date of death. For eligible veterans that died on or after Nov. 1, 1990, VA may also provide a headstone or marker for graves that are already marked with a private headstone or marker. When the grave is already marked, applicants will have the option to submit a claim for either a traditional headstone or marker, or a new medallion. When burial or memorialization is in a national, post, or state veterans' cemetery, a headstone or marker will be ordered by the cemetery officials based on inscription information provided by the next of kin. When burial is in a private cemetery, VA Form 40-1330, Application for Standard Government Headstone or Marker, must be submitted by the next of kin or a representative, such as a funeral director, cemetery official or veterans counselor, along with veterans military discharge documents, to request a Government-provided headstone or marker. Applications can be mailed or faxed.

Responsible for providing military funeral honors. "Honoring Those Who Served" is the title of the Department of Defense program for providing dignified military funerals to veterans who have defended our nation. The core elements of the funeral honors ceremony which will be conducted are flag folding, flag presentation, and playing of Taps. To arrange military funeral honors, contact your local funeral home. Military Homefront- Casualty Assistance Program
Casualty Assistance Program covers a wide spectrum of services ranging from supporting severely injured service members who are working to regain a level of normalcy in their lives to assisting family members of deceased, unaccounted for, or missing service members with final arrangements and with understanding and accessing certain benefits and entitlements.

Offer Maryland veterans, and their eligible dependents, a final resting place at one of five state veterans' cemeteries located throughout Maryland. A pre-interment program is available through which veterans may indicate their desire to be buried in one of the state's cemeteries and verify their eligibility for such burial on a pre-need basis. The following facilities provide interment services during the normal business week (Monday through Friday) and are open to the public 365 days of the year.

A United States flag is provided, at no cost, to drape a casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran who servied honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is furnished to honor the memory of a veteran's military service to his or her country. You must complete VA Form 21-2008, Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes, when applying for the flag. You may get a flag at any VA Regional Office or U.S. Post Office. Generally, the funeral director will help you obtain the flag.

Individual listing of Americans who contributed to the war effort. Any U.S. citizen who helped win the war, whether a veteran or someone on the home front, is eligible for the Registry. Names will be forever linked to the memorial's bronze and granite representations of their sacrifice and achievement.

Prepare certificates which bear the current President's signature expressing the country's grateful recognition of the veteran's service in the United States Armed Forces. Eligible recipients include the next of kind and loved ones of honorably discharged deceased veterans. More than one certificate may be provided. Eligible recipients may apply for a PMC in person at any VA regional office, by U.S. mail, or toll-free fax. Must complete and submit VA Form 40-0247, Application for Presidential Memorial Certificate.

Part of the U.S. Library of Congress' American Folklife Center. Collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. In addition, those U.S. citizen civilians who were actively involved in supporting war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, etc.) are also invited to share their valuable stories. Stories can be told through personal narratives (audio and video-taped interviews, written memoirs), correspondence (letters, postcards, v-mail, personal diaries) and visual materials (photographs, drawings, scrapbooks). The College Park Aviation Museum participates in this nationwide program.

Unique, living memorial honoring all military women - past, present, and future - and is the only major national memorial honoring women who have served in our nation's defense during all eras and in all services. Located at the Ceremonial Entrance to Arlington National Cemetery and is directly across Memorial Bridge from the Lincoln Memorial at the end of Memorial Drive. The Memorial houses an exhibit gallery, Hall of Honor, gift shop, theater, upper terrace, Court of Valor, and a computerized register containing 250,000 women's stories.
