For children whose parents were killed during active duty on or after September 11, 2001. Scholarships are available for natural and adopted children who are enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited undergraduate program. Individual scholarship amounts vary based on annual funding an individual need.

Annually award scholarships to veterans/active military, their sons, daughters or grandchildren. A son, daughter or grandchild of a deceased veteran is also eligible. Also offer joint scholarships with University of Phoenix and Devry University. The scholarships go to deserving high school seniors, high school JRTOC students and veterans pursuing a high education. Scholarship applications may be downloaded or requested by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the AMVETS National Programs Department.

DRS Scholarship Fund for Children of Fallen
For college-bound children of National Guardsmen who lost their lives in support of the war on terrorism. Students will receive up to $6,250 per year for four years if they attend a four-year institution. For those attending a two-year program at a community college or technical school, the scholarship will provide up to $6,250 for both years. Administered by the National Guard Educational Foundation.

Aid for tuition and other educational expenses are available for veterans and their family members who are attending an institution of higher learning within the borders of the State of Maryland. You must be:

  • A veteran or active duty military member who served in the conflicts in Iraq or Afghanistan (effective June 1, 2006);
  • The son or daughter or a member of the United States Armed Forces who died or was 100 percent disabled as a direct result of military service;
  • A veteran who suffers, as a direct result of military service, a disability of 25 percent or greater and has exhausted or is no longer eligible for federal veterans' educational benefits;
  • The son, daughter, or surviving spouse of a victim of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack who died as a result of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the attack on the Pentagon in Virginia, or the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania;
  • A POW/MIA of the Vietnam Conflict of his/her soon or daughter; the son, daughter, or surviving spouse (who has not remarried) of a state or local public safety employee or volunteer who died in the line of duty;
  • or a state or local public safety employee or volunteer who was 100 percent disabled in the line of duty.

Provides education grants to dependents of Air Force service members. The program is open to children of active duty, retired or deceased Air Force members. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA. Financial need is a strong consideration in determining who receives the $2,000 awards, and recipients must reapply annually to be considered for an extension.

Hodson Trust Star Scholarship - Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans
The Hodson Trust and four Maryland colleges (Hood College, Johns Hopkins University, St. John's College [Annapolis campus] and Washington College) are awarding annual undergraduate and graduate scholarships to eligible veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Each of the four schools will award up to a total of three scholarships a year beginning with academic year 2007-08 until academic year 2012. The scholarships will meet 100 percent of each participating institution's published annual tuition, room, board, books and mandatory student fees, not otherwise covered by federal, state and outside assistance.

Offers grants to dependents of severely injured military personnel. Available to dependents of active duty, guard and reserve members who have been injured in the line of duty and designated severely injured by the VA. The maximum grant is $500, which may be used to fund education, arts or sports programs.

Award $1,500 scholarships to military children under the age of 23. Applicants must be the dependent of an active duty, reserve or retired service member, or a service member who was killed in action. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA, and all applications must be submitted through the nearest commissary location.

Sponsors a scholarship program for dependent children of U.S. military personnel serving after September 11, 2001. To be eligible, you must be under age 24 and enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in an accredited undergraduate program. The scholarship is open to dependents of active duty and retired service members or those who were wounded or killed in action. Selected students will receive a one-time award of $3,000.

The program is designed to provide financial assistance to United States Armed Forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts, and their sons, daughters, or spouses who are current high school seniors, and full-time and part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled in an eligible accredited Maryland postsecondary institution. Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition - Audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9 - 12 that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships.

Patriot's Pen Essay Contest - Youth-essay writing contest nationwide competition that gives students in grades 6, 7 and 8 the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. Top national winners each receive a savings bond anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000.
