FOOD AND NUTRITION PROGRAM

Senior Nutrition Program: 240-777-3810 (Voice)

Provides a nutrition program for adults age 60 and over, their spouse of any age and in some circumstances adults with a disability of any age. Provides lunch, socialization, nutrition education, nutrition screening, and other programs and services at congregate sites. Provides referral to programs that may provide home-delivered meals to eligible seniors and people with disabilities. 

All meals provide 1/3 of the Dietary Reference Intakes (nutrients needed everyday) For older adults and follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. View the latest Senior Nutrition Brochure.

Ethnic Programs

Ethnic programs provide ethnically-appropriate meals and programs tailored to their participants. They are open to all eligible seniors, regardless of ethnicity.  Sites schedules change during the year.  Call the contact telephone for current information.

 Home Delivered Meals Programs

 Each home delivered meals program serves a distinct geographic area in
 Montgomery County. However, JSSA provides Kosher meals in many areas of the
 County.

 Individuals who are eligible for home delivered meals are:

  • Age 60 or over and the spouse of any age. A disabled child of a person receiving meals is also eligible.
  • Frail and generally unable to shop or prepare meals.
  • Unable to obtain food from another source, such as a family member or neighbor who can shop and prepare meals.

 Cost per meal varies. Contact the individual program listed below for more
 information.  The best time to call most programs is in the morning.

Grocery Shopping

Montgomery County Office of the
American Red Cross of the National Capital Area:

Provides trained volunteers who assist low-income, frail older adults with weekly grocery shopping either by shopping for them or escorting them to the store. This service is for adults 60+ who are unable to afford a private delivery service, or who live in an area where private service is not available.

Montgomery County Ride On Bus
Grocery shopping service is provided for a limited number of subsidized senior apartment buildings once per week. It is also available to other buildings with a large number of low-income seniors, provided there is no other grocery transportation available. Contact the building property management to find out if this service is available.
