Statistics on Teen Violence

  • 1 of 3 high school and college students have experienced sexual, physical, verbal or emotional violence in dating relationships.
  • Over 1000 high school students were questioned about dating violence: 45% of females and 43% of males reported experiencing violence form a partner at least once.
  • 50% of all reported rape victims were between 11 and 20 years old (1998 Montgomery County Crime Statistics)

Signs to watch for (Indicators of an abusive dating relationship)

  • Heightened anxiety
  • Depression, thoughts of suicide
  • Bruises, broken bones, cuts, heavy makeup to cover injuries
  • Excessive guilt or shame
  • Low self-esteem
  • Truancy, falling grades in school
  • Withdrawal, passivity
  • Heightened aggressiveness
