| How are We Drawing the Line?
The Department of Police has an Alcohol
Enforcement Intiative which uses a technique called "controlled
dispersal" to break up parties. This involves stationing
officers at various points of exit, making sure young
people dont leave unless they are sober and able
to get home safely. The officers also write citations
and call parents of juveniles to let them know that their
child was attending a party at which alcohol was served.
In addition to enforcement, the participating
police, health and school departments and other organizations
also educate the community through media advocacy, providing
speakers for community groups, PTA's, and students, developing
publications and resources on underage drinking, as well
as publicizing up to date research on substance abuse
prevention.
Drawing the Line has worked with many other
organizations and individuals to help plan events and
educate the community about underage drinking issues.
As part of the project, the Board of License
Commissioners (the alcohol regulatory agency) uses underage
volunteers to make sure that retailers check identification
before selling alcohol to young people. Drawing the Line
has also worked closely with local hotels to check identification
and make sure that our alcohol laws are obeyed and to
eliminate parties in hotel rooms.
Alcohol-free activities allow teens to have
fun and learn to socialize safely.
We deal appropriately with offenders.
