Montgomery County Latino Health Initiative
Cancer Prevention & Control Program

The Latino Health Initiative (LHI) Cancer Prevention and Control Program of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services was established in May of 2001 through a grant provided by the State of Maryland Cigarette Restitution Funds

The overall goal of the Program is to reduce the incidence of and mortality rates of colorectal, breast, and cervical cancers among Latinos residing in Montgomery County.

The program seeks to:

  • Increase the knowledge of cancer risk factors and prevention among Latinos in Montgomery County.
  • Increase awareness and utilization of existing cancer screening and prevention services among the target population.
  • Increase the involvement and capacity to work in cancer prevention and control of local Latino community-based organizations and entities serving Latinos.
  • In collaboration with numerous partners such as local Latino community-based organizations, agencies in the Montgomery County Cancer Crusade and the George Washington University Mobile Mammography Program; the LHI’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program provides culturally and linguistically appropriate, education, screening, referrals, follow-up, and support to low-income, uninsured, Latino populations.
