The Latino Health
Initiative (LHI) of the Montgomery County Department of
Health and Human Services, in collaboration with the George
Washington University Mobile Mammography Program provide
free cancer screening and education services to low -income,
uninsured women living in the County.
The goal of this collaboration
is to make early detection of breast cancer and breast
health education readily available to Latinas in Montgomery
County. Participating women receive culturally and linguistically
appropriate education and support. Free mammograms are
provided through the use of a self-contained mobile unit
that travels to community sites in the area, offering
one-stop screening performed in a comfortable, convenient
environment. The Mammovan is both handicapped and wheel
chair accessible.
The Latino Health
Initiative assists in the coordination of services by
linking entities and programs serving Latinos in Montgomery
County with the George Washington Mobile Mammography Program.
Staff from the LHI’s Cancer Prevention and Control
Program identifies key sites for the provision of screening
services and provides culturally and linguistically appropriate
breast health education to participating clients.
