What is Stress?
Stress is different to everyone. What
may be stressful to one person, may not be for another.
In general, stress is what happens to the body when
it is exposed to a stressor or a life-changing event.
A stressor is any event that is perceived by a person
as threatening or capable of causing harm or loss.
When you are under stress your body undergoes
numerous psychological and physiological changes. Your
heart rate increases, your glands release hormones,
and your blood pressures rises. All of these reactions
occur because your body is preparing to defend itself
and to resist change. The following are other typical
reactions to stress. See if you recognize them.
Symptoms of Stress
Your mouth becomes dry and you have difficulty
swallowing.
You get a tight feeling in your chest.
You have can’t go to sleep due to Insomnia.
Your stomach seems to knot up or you have cramps.
You begin to perspire. Your hands may start to
shake.
You have a headache or sore muscles.
You have chronic colds or flu.
You may be engaging in addictive behaviors such
as excessive smoking, drinking, drug use or overeating.
All of these are typical symptoms of stress
however it is recommended that you see your doctor or
a counselor to verify that stress is the cause. Physical
symptoms of stress often become worse if the stress
continues to build. Chronic stress can have a negative
effect on your life and can lead to serious conditions
such as depression or alcoholism.
As a teenager, you are experiencing many
changes in your life. You are discovering who you are,
you may be starting a relationship with a girlfriend
or boyfriend, or you may be preparing for college. All
of these events require a new way of thinking, learning
and coping. Remember, that no one even adults are not
free from stress, so it’s important to learn how to
cope with it. Coping with stress can help you be a happier
and healthier person!
