The Office of the Court Evaluators was
developed to provide independent evaluations in family law matters before the Circuit
Court. Evaluations are undertaken only by direct order of the Court.
Personnel
The Office of the Court Evaluators currently consists of an Office Manager and nine
part-time investigators, all of whom have social work backgrounds. The office also serves
as a field placement for a graduate student from Catholic University School of Social
Work.
Types of Evaluations
Despite the name, the Office of the Court Evaluators does not evaluate Courts. Evaluations
are usually in one of two general areas - adoption evaluations and child
custody/visitation evaluations. More limited evaluations in child custody matters are
termed assessments. All evaluations and/or assessments are undertaken solely by order of
the Court.
What is involved in a Court
Evaluation or Assessment
Evaluations and assessments are tailored to the requirements of each case. In most cases
interviews will be conducted with clients either in their home or in the Office of the
Court Evaluator, or both. Children will be interviewed or observed, as is age appropriate.
An oral report to the Court is then made in an assessment. In evaluations, schools, mental
health professionals, other county agencies and references are contacted and a written
report is then provided to the Court.
