What happens after
Trash, recyclables are collected

Residents, business owners, property managers and others who are interested in what happens to their trash and recyclables after they are collected are invited to attend a free six-week course offered by Montgomery County's Division of Solid Waste Services, beginning February 3.

Entitled "Behind the Scenes," the course will provide details on the County's recycling programs for single-family homes, apartments, condominiums, businesses, schools and other organizations. Information will also be presented about progress towards reaching the County's 50 percent recycling goal.

Other topics include recycling do's and don'ts, mixed paper recycling, plastics, hazardous waste, composting and grasscycling, the Division's Master Recycler/Composter Volunteer Program and more. Tours of the County's award-winning Recycling Center, Solid Waste Transfer Station, Resource Recovery Facility, and Composting Facility will be offered, in addition to a lunchtime visit to the newly renovated Gothic Barn in Dickerson, which features composting toilets, a greywater system, and geothermal heating and cooling.

"Behind the Scenes" will be held on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Solid Waste Transfer Station, located near the intersection of Route 355 and Shady Grove Road in Derwood.
