Upcoming Legislative Initiatives
To be Discussed at Briefing
Guns in the hands of persons charged with domestic violence and how to assist the working poor after welfare reform are two of the key legislative issues to be discussed at the 20th annual Women's Legislative Briefing on February 6, at the Natcher Conference Center on the NIH campus in Bethesda, from 12:30 to 5:45 p.m.
Lynne Battaglia, the first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, will present the keynote address, and WUSA -TV (Channel 9) news anchor Phyllis Armstrong will serve as mistress of ceremonies. Eleanor Smeal, founder of the Feminist Majority Foundation and former national president of NOW, will be the special guest at a reception following the program.
Upcoming legislative initiatives in the 2000 Maryland General Assembly will be addressed in workshops covering civil rights, economic self-sufficiency, family law, effective lobbying and health. County and State elected officials will also be available for networking during the reception.
Hosted by the Montgomery County Commission for Women, the Legislative Briefing is co-sponsored by the Commissions for Women in seven counties, and the State of Maryland, in addition to more than 40 women's and community organizations.
Pre-registration is available until January 31. On-site registration will be held from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. Interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing are available with 10 working days' notice.
