DUNCAN APPLAUDS COUNTY COUNCIL
FOR ACTION ON JUVENILE JUSTICE OVERSIGHT
County Executive Douglas M. Duncan today praised the County Council for their swift action in broadening the role and function of the Juvenile Court Committee, one of the recommendations of the Executive's Juvenile Justice Task Force. Council Bill 4-00, sponsored by Council President Subin, will change the name of the Committee to the Commission on Juvenile Justice and will revise the function of the group to include the independent evaluation and assessment of programs and services provided by or funded by the state Department of Juvenile Justice in Montgomery County.
"I want to thank Mr. Subin and members of the County Council for their prompt attention to this issue," said Duncan. "The Commission on Juvenile Justice will be instrumental in helping us to ensure that improvements to the juvenile justice system are made, and that they are made in a timely fashion."
The state is considering similar statewide oversight of the juvenile justice system, which has been under intense scrutiny in recent months.
