EARTH DAY EVENTS PLANNED FOR
APRIL AND MAY
The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has produced an Earth Day Action Kit to promote activities and celebrations being held in the Washington metropolitan area and to publicize the 30th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22.
The Earth Day Action Kit contains a variety of environmental tips, a list of Earth Day resources, as well as information about special events and classes for residents of all ages. Citizens can view the Earth Day Action Kit online or request a copy from DEP.

April 17-21: Earth Day: 30th Anniversary Celebration
National Naval Medical Center; 8901 Wisconsin Avenue; Bethesda, Maryland. Environmental displays on "Main Street." All events are free to the public. A special event will be held April 19 with tree seedling and environmental giveaways, and additional displays. Contact Beth Law at 301-295-0725.
April 22: EarthFair 2000
10 a.m.-5 p.m. The National Mall, Washington, D.C. Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, James Taylor, Carole King, Clint Black, Sweet Honey and the Rock, Ted Danson, Edward James Olmos, Melanie Griffith, among others. EarthFair will feature hundreds of exhibits on creating an environmentally sustainable and activities for kids. For more information, see http://www.earthday.net/
April 22: Earth Day at Seneca Creek State Park
11950 Clopper Road, Gaithersburg. Volunteers are needed to work on clean-up activities throughout the park, including trash pick-up, leaf raking and mulching playgrounds. Volunteers should come prepared to work regardless of the weather and long pants, work gloves and boots are suggested. Arrive at the Visitor Center at 9 a.m. for assignments and plan to work until 1 p.m. Bring water and a snack or lunch. For more information, call 301-924-2127.
April 22: Gunpowder Watershed Festival Earth Day 2000
11a.m. - 5 p.m.; Oregon Ridge Park and outlying areas in Gunpowder Watershed.
Celebrate the Gunpowder Watershed and Baltimore's Drinking Water by learning more about protecting the natural assets of this source of the area's drinking water. Features live music, great food, an environmental fair, indoor and outdoor activities, and bus tours to various parts of the watershed. Free shuttle buses will be available from the Light Rail stop at Hunt Valley Mall. Contact the Gunpowder Watershed Coalition, P.O. April 22: Cabin John Creek/Tributaries Cleanup Day
(An updated list of cleanup information, with any new sites, will be posted at www.cabinjohn.org). 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Meet at Locust Grove Nature Center, 7777 Democracy Blvd. Clean up the creek on either side of Democracy Blvd. Community service credits available. Call ahead to register for free pizza for lunch. Kids under 14 need to be accompanied by adult. To register, call 301-299-1990.
April 22-23: Earth Day Weekend
American Plant Food Company; 5258 & 7405 River Road, Bethesda. Both locations feature special Earth Day and EarthWise gardening booths, with horticultural specialists available to answer questions on native plantings, conserving water in the garden, wildlife and gardens, and chemical-free lawn and garden care. April 26: Earth Day: Fun Run/Walk

April 28: Earth Day: Children's Programs and Clean Up
9:30 a.m.- 3 p.m.; National Naval Medical Center; 8901 Wisconsin Avenue; Bethesda, Maryland 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - Cody and BJ perform environmental songs (Auditorium) 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. - Ten simultaneous hands-on programs. Each program runs 30 minutes. Reservations required. 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.- Stream and Base-wide Clean-Up. Meet across from the Citgo Station. Look for the Earth Day banner. April 29: Cabin John Creek/Tributaries Cleanup Day 9:30 a.m. - noon. Clean-up Area: Creek between MacArthur Blvd. and River Rd. Meet on Cabin John side of Union Arch Bridge (one lane bridge) on MacArthur Blvd. Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Contact Burr Gray, 703-607-2740(w). 8:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. Meet at Seven Locks Elementary School, located at NW intersection of Bradley and Seven Locks. Clean-up will start at Bradley Blvd and work south toward River Rd. Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Call Doug Holy 301-504-2241 (w). May 7: Audubon Nature Fair
11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Audubon Naturalist Society; 8940 Jones Mill Road; Chevy Chase, Maryland. The Washington area's largest family nature fair will take place at the 40-acre Woodend preserve. Participants can take guided hikes through Rock Creek Park, relax by the pond, meet an owl at Scales 'n Tales, or watch Audubon nature travel videos. The fair will feature craft-making for kids, a village market with more than 50 juried artisans selling hand-made nature crafts and garden gear, a wine and beer tent, festive food, an organic farmer's market, native and decorative plants, and a birdseed sale. Also featured will be a roster of popular entertainers: the Singing Capital Chorus, Joe Dicey and Jamnation Band, the Nicola Whimsey Show, Frank "Banjo Man" Cassel, and "Tales from Japan," performed by the Deaf Access Company/ Bethesda Academy of Performing Arts. Free parking for a shuttle bus to Woodend will be available from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Metro Red Line's Medical Center station (Center Dr. lot at NIH), and at North Chevy Chase Elementary School on Jones Bridge Road. Parking on-site is limited. Ride your bike to Woodend (nearby bike routes include Rock Creek Park and the Capital Crescent Trail), and receive $1 off on admission. Entry fees are $6 for adults, $2 for children 12 and younger, and free for those under 2. Festivities will take place rain or shine.
