PARKING FEES AT WHEATON METRO REDUCED
Beginning March 1, the Metro Board of Directors has approved a reduction of parking fees charged at the Wheaton Metro station parking garage, located on Viers Mill Road at Wheaton Plaza. The nine-month program is designed to motivate area residents to take advantage of available parking spaces at the Wheaton Metro station and solve overcrowding at the Glenmont Metro parking garage.
"I'm pleased that Metro was willing, at the County's suggestion, to try and redistribute parking demand to match available capacity," said County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. "I hope that lowering parking fees will be a win-win situation for commuters, the County and Metro by encouraging more people to use transit and reduce traffic congestion."
The daily parking fee of $2.25 will be discounted to $1.50; the first-come, first-served monthly $45 parking fee will be reduced to $30; and the monthly guaranteed $55 parking fee will be lowered to $40.
According to Metro, only 40 percent of the nearly 1,000 parking spaces at Wheaton are used during the busiest times, whereas the 1,800 spaces at the Glenmont garage fill up before the end of rush hour.
The Metro Board will review the success of the program in six months and may make changes, if necessary.
