County to Hold Juneteenth Celebration;
Event Marks "Freedom Day" for Former Slaves
The public is invited to attend Montgomery County's fourth annual "Juneteenth" celebration, recognizing the freedom of slaves. The event will be held on Thursday, June 15 from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Ross J. Boddy Community Recreation Center, 18529 Brooke Road, Sandy Spring.
The ceremony will include a tour of the Sandy Spring Slave Museum and African Art Gallery, entertainment and light refreshments. Mistress of Ceremony will be J.C. Hayward, WUSA-Channel 9 anchorwoman.
Juneteenth was first celebrated on June 19, 1865 as a way of marking the liberation of African American slaves in the U.S. by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
