Evans Resigns as County's Director of
Information Systems and Telecommunications
Donald V. Evans, director of Montgomery County's Department of Information Systems and Telecommunications (DIST), will be leaving the position he has held for the past five years to pursue new opportunities in the information technology field. His resignation will take effect July 31.
"Under Don Evans' leadership, this County has positioned itself well for the 21st century," said County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. "This has been an extraordinary time in the information technology field, and we have been fortunate in Montgomery County to have had someone of Don's caliber to lead us forward."
During his five years as director of DIST, Evans developed an information technology strategic plan, launched the County's presence on the world wide web, implemented a successful desktop computer modernization program, and initiated and managed a nationally recognized Y2K program. He also managed the County's transition to a new PBX telephone system, launched an eCommerce initiative - eMontgomery - and moved the County toward the purchase and implementation of a new public safety radio system. The County received 12 national awards in information technology during Evans' tenure as DIST Director.
"Don Evans has exceeded our highest expectations," said Duncan. "I wish him all the best as he moves to a national arena to pursue new challenges in the information technology field."
Prior to joining Montgomery County government, Evans served eight years with IBM and 21 years in the United States Marine Corps, where he was operations director for an 80-person mainframe data center responsible for production, telecommunications, customer satisfaction and support systems.
Duncan announced that a nationwide search will be launched immediately to find a replacement for Evans. The director of the Department of Information Systems and Telecommunications is appointed by the County Executive and must be approved by the County Council. The position is responsible for managing a $18 million budget and a staff of 136, with a mission to develop, manage and promote the efficient use of automated information systems and telecommunications within the County government.
