Twinbrook Library Re-opens
Following Renovations
The Twinbrook Community Library re-opened today following major renovations which had closed the facility since April 1999.
Included among the renovations are a new heating/cooling system, an elevator, a children's program area, a quiet study room and additional open spaces. The 17,000- square-foot facility houses approximately 100,000 volumes, and the staff estimates that more than 375,000 items will be circulated per year.
County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and County Council members Blair Ewing and Phil Andrews were among the local elected officials attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Duncan referred to the facility as "new" because "the renovations have brought new life to a library that first opened more than 40 years ago…."
When it first opened in 1959, the library occupied rented space in the basement of the People's Drug Store across Veirs Mill Road from the current facility. The current building was built in the Twinbrook Shopping Center in 1959. It was the first public library in Montgomery County to be located in a shopping center.
The renovation team included architect Greg Lukmire, Warren & Young Construction Group and County staff from the Division of Facilities and Services and Department of Public Libraries. Jan Baird-Adams will serve as the agency head.
The Twinbrook Library will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, 1 to 8:30 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The new telephone number is 240-777-0240; TTY 240-777-0904.
