NEW ELECTRIC UNIVERSAL SERVICE
PROGRAM BEGINS JULY 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 19, 2000

Beginning July 1, 2000, Montgomery County's Electric Universal Service Program (EUSP) will accept applications from low-income individuals who need assistance in paying their electric bills. The program is available to all Maryland electric consumers, both homeowners and renters.

Applications may be picked up after July 1 at the Department of Health and Human Services at 1301 Piccard Drive in Rockville or the Department's office sites at the Upcounty Regional Services Center, 12900 Middlebrook Road in Germantown and the Silver Spring Center, 8818 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.

EUSP provides payment to the electric utility for ongoing bills, to settle past unpaid bills and for weatherization services. Customers who live in subsidized housing where heat is included in the rent may also be eligible for help from the Electric Universal Service Program. Eligibility for the program is based on the following gross income standards.

For a household of one, maximum monthly income is $1,044, maximum annual income$12,525.
For a household of two maximum monthly income is $1,406, maximum annual income, $16,875.
For a household of three, maximum monthly income is $1,769, maximum annual income, $21,225.
For a household of four, maximum monthly income is, $2,131, maximum annual income, $25,525.
For a household of five, maximum monthly income is $2,494, maximum annual income, $29,925.
For a household of six, maximum monthly income is, $2,856, maximum annual income, $34,275.

Each additional person add $ 363 $ 4,350

The new program will not affect other assistance that individuals may be receiving. The Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) is still available for customers who qualify. Only one application is needed for both programs.
