LOCAL FARMERS CAN RECYCLE PESTICIDE BOTTLES

Montgomery, Frederick, and Carroll County farmers and commercial pesticide applicators can recycle empty pesticide containers through a program sponsored by the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and U.S. Ag Recycling, Inc.

Empty pesticide jugs can be recycled on July 25, August 22, and September 19 at the Frederick County Landfill, 9031 Reichs Ford Road, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Containers must be triple-rinsed or pressure-rinsed before they will be accepted for recycling. MDA recommends that pesticide residue from rinsing be used in additional pesticide applications.

U.S. Ag Recycling, Inc. chips collected pesticide containers and recycles them into new plastic products, such as lumber and fenceposts.

MDA estimates that 25 to 35 million pesticde containers are sold annually in the United States. MDA inspectors collected 32,000 containers during 30 collection days at nine sites around the state.

For more information, call Lee Lambert, Recycling Operations Manager for Frederick County, at 301-694-2086.
