County Archives celebrates 15th anniversary;
Werner papers to be dedicated in public ceremony

The personal papers of the late Stella B. Werner, County Council member from 1950 to 1962, will be donated to the Montgomery County Archives in a special ceremony on July 27 marking the 15th anniversary of the archives. The event, which will be open to the public, will be held at 1 p.m. in the Grand Courtroom of the historic Red Brick Courthouse, 29 Courthouse Square, Rockville.

The participants will include County Council member Blair Ewing, a representative of County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and Mary Werner Rose, of Damascus, a daughter of Mrs. Werner, who will donate the papers.

Mrs. Werner, who died in 1981, served as executive director of the Montgomery County Charter Committee from 1942 to 1947, and led the fight for the County's council-manager form of government. She also contributed to the formation of the departments of Public Libraries and Recreation.

The County Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville was named in her memory in 1984.

Established on July 29, 1985 by County Executive Charles Gilchrist, the archives is operated under a contract between the County and History Associates, Inc., an archives and records management consulting firm in Rockville. The archives acquires, describes, preserves and makes available to the public the historic records of the County government and quasi-governmental organizations.

The ceremony is sponsored by the Montgomery County Archives and Peerless Rockville.
