LOCAL EMERGENCY PLANNING COUNCIL SEEKS APPLICANTS

Montgomery County's Local Emergency Planning Council (LEPC), that reviews and makes recommendations to the County Executive on matters relating to hazardous materials, is seeking applicants for several vacant positions. Individuals are needed to represent the media; federally regulated industries (under the Superfund program or SARA); high use industries such as chemical distributors, printers and publishers, woodworking firms, and auto service facilities; hospitals; and a community group or citizens association. Members of the LEPC are recommended by the County Executive and appointed by the Governor.

Mandated by federal regulations, the LEPC annually reviews the County's Hazardous Materials Response Plan, collects information about hazardous materials at the local level, makes recommendations on training of emergency personnel, and ensures citizen access to hazardous materials data from regulated businesses and facilities. The LEPC also makes recommendations to the County Executive on the long-term handling of toxic materials in the County.

Meetings of the LEPC are held quarterly in Rockville, usually on the third Thursday of the month between 9 and 11 a.m. The meetings are open to the public and interested parties are invited to attend. LEPC members do not receive financial compensation.

LEPC applicants should submit an application form, a resume, and a brief letter detailing their interest and experience to the Office of Emergency Management by August 25. The application form can be obtained by calling 240-777-2300 or obtaining one from the Office of Emergency Management, 100 Maryland Avenue, Room 220, Rockville, MD 20850.

For more information, call the Office of Emergency Management at 240-777-2300.
