County Seeking Residents to Serve on
Wheaton Redevelopment Subcommittees

The newly appointed Wheaton Redevelopment Steering Committee is seeking residents and business owners in the community who want to participate in the redevelopment efforts by serving on a subcommittee. Members will make recommendations to the committee regarding changes that will improve the Wheaton business district.

The following subcommittees are being formed: Marketing and Business Development; Transportation and Public Safety; Housing and Education; Urban Design and Image; and Outreach and Community Development.

Individuals interested in serving on one of these subcommittees should send a letter indicating interest and background to Nancy Gasko, Wheaton Redevelopment Program, 11501 Georgia Avenue, Suite 403, Wheaton, Md. 20902. Letters can also be e-mailed to: Nancy.Gasko@montgomerycountymd.gov or faxed to 240-777-8110. Indicate the subcommittee on which you are interested in serving.

In addition to serving on a subcommittee, the public is invited to attend a series of focus groups that are currently taking place. They are designed to gather input and ideas on the future of Wheaton. Hosted by the Mid-County Services Center, the Wheaton Redevelopment Office, Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Westfield, Inc. and the National Main Street Center, the focus groups will give interested individuals an opportunity to discuss how they currently use the downtown and to view slides and models of different architectural styles, building densities and uses.

Focus groups will be held on the following dates:

Friday, September 15, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Sunday, September 17, 2 - 5 p.m.

Tuesday, September 19, 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Also scheduled is one remaining special "Linkage" focus group that will provide input on ways of linking Westfield Shoppingtown/Wheaton (the former Wheaton Plaza) with downtown Wheaton. That focus group is scheduled for Friday, September 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
