County to Hold Sixth
Annual Diversity Day

Montgomery County will hold its sixth annual Diversity Day on Wednesday, October 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Executive Office Building, 101 Monroe Street, Rockville. This year's keynote speaker, Donna Ashley Nelms, Director of Corporate Diversity, Hallmark Cards, Inc., will discuss the relevance of diversity issues within the workplace in the new millennium.

Diversity Day is a daylong program sponsored by the County's Office of Human Resources to provide employees and citizens with information on various cultures and lifestyles. More than 100 vendors will be selling food, arts, crafts and other items that represent cultural diversity. In addition, ethnic musicians, singers and dancers will be performing at various times throughout the day. Participants in the day's activities are encouraged to bring a canned or non-perishable food item that will be donated to the Manna Food Center, which serves a large part of the homeless population in Montgomery County.

Organizations or individuals interested in participating in Diversity Day may reserve booth space in advance. Booths are free of charge, but the number is limited.

Applications can be requested by calling 240-777-2705. The deadline for submission of applications is October 6. Priority consideration will be given to groups or vendors that support community and workforce diversity and which represent the ethnic and cultural diversity of the County.

Opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. with remarks by County Executive Douglas M. Duncan, County Council President Michael L. Subin and Congresswoman Connie Morella. Channel 9 news anchor Andrea Roane will serve as emcee for the opening session and Channel 7 Good Morning Washington news anchor Don Hudson will host the afternoon session.

Special free shuttle bus service is being provided from the Silver Spring, Bethesda, East County and Upcounty areas.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, or to request an exhibit booth application, or free shuttle bus service schedule , call 240-777-2705, or TTY 240-777-5126.
