Public celebration set
For All-America City Award;
County to officially receive award
From National Civic League chair

Family activities, a variety of musical entertainment - headed by The Fabulous Hubcaps - food vendors and fireworks will highlight the free public celebration designed to observe the County's selection as an All-America City.

The "All-America Community Celebration," to be held - rain or shine -- on October 15, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Westfield Shoppingtown in Wheaton, will include the presentation of the All-America City Award by National Civic League Chair Scott Fosler to County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. Fosler is a former member and president of the Montgomery County Council.

Featured musical entertainers will be The Fabulous Hubcaps and the U.S. Marine Corps Showband. In addition, several local ethnic bands will perform a variety of international music. Children's activities will be provided and food and refreshments will be available for sale. Picnics are welcome and blankets and chairs are suggested for fireworks watching.

Montgomery County was one of only 10 communities from across the country to be selected as an All-America City at a national conference held in Louisville, KY this past summer. The award recognizes communities where residents, government, business and non-profit organizations work together to address critical local issues. It focuses on the ability of cities, counties, neighborhoods or regions to solve local problems by innovatively tackling challenges and achieving results.

The County Executive said, "Winning the title of an All-America City is a very high honor and one that belongs to every resident of Montgomery County. This event is meant to say thank you and to share the honor with people from throughout the county.

"We want residents of all ages to come out and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment, fun and food," Duncan added.

For more information about the celebration, call the Montgomery County Recreation Department at 240-777-6821 or access the County's web site at www.co.mo.md.us.
