Student murals to adorn
Downtown Silver Spring area;
Unveiling ceremony in November

Part of the revitalization area in downtown Silver Spring is getting a new look, thanks to a new mural project and some talented middle-school art students. The Art on the Fence project features the works of students from area middle schools - Sligo, Eastern, Col. E. Brooke Lee, and White Oak -- who are creating a cooperative mural on the theme of "my community."

The mural panels will be displayed on the construction fences of Downtown Silver Spring to give the revitalization efforts a more enticing and visitor-friendly appearance. Part of the focus of the new Downtown Silver Spring project is to create a community where arts and culture can thrive.

The schools selected one art class or several exceptional students to meet and discuss the young people's impressions of what it means to be a community. Incorporating the elements of their discussion, the murals will express the unified vision of the students, in addition to their artistic talents.

The murals will be unveiled during a special ceremony on November 15 at 11a.m. County Executive Douglas M. Duncan will help unveil the mural, to be located on of Fenton Street near Wayne Avenue.
