REMEMBER TO REMOVE
POLITICAL CAMPAIGN SIGNS NEXT WEEK

To keep our community clutter- and litter-free, residents are reminded to remove political campaign signs from private property and public right-of-ways next week after Election Day on November 7.

The County sign regulations are designed to enhance the appearance of our community and ensure the safety of both pedestrians and motorists by specifying the types of signs that can be displayed and where they can be posted.

Non-compliance with the sign regulations may result in the issuance of a $500 civil citation for each violation, along with removal of the sign. A political candidate and the sign installer can be held jointly responsible for compliance with the sign regulations.

The regulations define three different types of signs. Temporary signs are displayed on private property for up to 30 days and do not require a permit. Limited duration signs apply to signs that will be displayed for longer periods of time on private property and also apply to any sign in the County's public right-of-way. State law prohibits display of any signs in a state-owned right-of-way. (State roads are identified by a number, such as Route 355.) A limited duration sign requires a sign permit that will allow a user to display the sign for one year. Permanent signs, intended to be displayed on private property for an indefinite period of time, also require a sign permit.

Political campaign signs are either temporary signs or limited duration signs.

Residents can find out more about the sign requirements and determine whether they need to obtain a sign permit by calling the County's Department of Permitting Services at 240-777-6240. Or, go to www.emontgomery.org and click on permits, zoning, and then sign permits.
