FAIRLAND COMMUNITY CENTER BEHIND SCHEDULE;
COUNTY TERMINATES CONTRACTOR

On November 17, County officials terminated MDC Builders, L.L.C. of Lanham, Maryland as the contractor to build the Fairland Community Center located at 4910 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville.

The new center was originally scheduled to be completed on August 10, 2000, but continued delays in the progress of the work by MDC have forced the County to take action to remove the contractor. As of the required completion date, MDC had not achieved substantial completion of the project and there remained uncorrected defective work.

Under the County's contract, a performance bond guarantees completion of the project. The County will be taking steps to ensure the project is finished as soon as possible.

The 24,000 square-foot community center will eventually house a gymnasium, weight/exercise room, art studio and kiln room, social hall, kitchen and dance floor, game room, vending area, senior/community lounge, conference room and meeting space.
