U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman
To Address Human Rights Awards Breakfast
United States Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman will be an honored guest and make a special address at the First Annual Human Relations Commission Awards Ceremony on Thursday, December 14, 2000. The breakfast event will be held from 7:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Chevy Chase Holiday Inn.
In 1997, Herman was sworn in as the nations' 23rd Secretary of Labor and the first African American to head the department. Under her leadership, the U.S. Department of Labor has focused its work on three goals: a prepared workforce, a secure workforce and a quality workplace.
The awards ceremony was initiated by the Human Relations Commission to annually recognize local residents who have been instrumental in breaking barriers and healing divisiveness, as well as promoting respect and bridging differences. This year's award will be presented posthumously to Michael J. Gough, a well-known community activist and public school system administrator in Montgomery County.
The keynote address will be given by Elizabeth Birch, Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign. Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and County Council President Blair Ewing will also speak. Human Relations Commission Executive Director Odessa M. Shannon will make an announcement concerning the Montgomery County Human Relations Commission Hall of Fame.
Tickets to the breakfast and ceremony are $15. They are available at the Human Relations Commission, 110 North Washington Street, Rockville, MD 20850. Space is limited and tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
The Chevy Chase Holiday Inn is located at 5520 Wisconsin Avenue. The hotel is located two blocks south of the Friendship Heights Metro station and free parking will be available at the facility during the event.
