VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR
UPPER PATUXENT RIVER CLEAN UP

Volunteers are needed on Saturday April 1, 2000 to participate in a clean up that will help protect local water quality along the Upper Patuxent River.

The clean up will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Izaak Walton League of America Wildlife Achievement Chapter (WAC) Headquarters on Mullinix Mill Road in Damascus. Parking is available, and WAC will provide water, a commemorative patch and lunch at noon to all participants.

Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and are asked to bring rakes and shovels. Gloves will be provided. The annual clean up along the Patuxent is sponsored by WAC to promote the organization's long-term commitment to resource conservation. Also sponsoring the event this year are the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the member agencies of the Patuxent Reservoirs Watershed Protection group, including Montgomery County. The Chesapeake Bay Trust is providing partial funding support.

This year's clean up is part of April's 'Earth Month' celebrations that will focus on increasing environmental awareness and citizen stewardship of the Patuxent River. Other planned activities include nature trail hikes, canoe workshops, and tours of the Patuxent Filtration Plant and T. Howard Duckett Dam.

To volunteer or to receive more information about the clean up, call Bill Kelly at 301-253-5009. For information about other Earth Month activities, contact Meo Curtis at 240-777-7711.
