WINNERS OF RIDE ON'S ANNUAL ART MURAL CONTEST
ANNOUNCED
Students from St. Elizabeth's School in Rockville captured first place honors in the Ride On bus system's 14th annual mural contest for sixth graders. Sponsored by the Montgomery County Department of Public Works and Transportation, the contest celebrates Earth Day and National Transportation Week.
St. Elizabeth's winning mural depicts a colorful metropolis featuring transit options, including a Ride On bus with passengers waiting at the bus stop, Metrorail, carpools, and vanpools. The mural features the slogan: "The Millennium is Here, Let's Give a Cheer, Use Ride On Buses to Keep the Air Clear."
"We've been delighted by the wonderful murals submitted by the students," said Carolyn Biggins, chief of the Division of Transit Services. "The artwork shows concern for the environment while creatively displaying commuting alternatives."
A Ride On bus will take the winning art class on a field trip in May. The students will also receive Ride On Youth Cruiser Passes for a month of unlimited rides this summer and a bus card featuring the mural.
Second and third place awards went to Calvary Lutheran Middle School in Wheaton and Christ Episcopal School in Rockville. Honorable mentions were presented to Julius West Middle School, Eastern Middle School, Argyle Middle School, and North Chevy Chase Elementary School.
Judges for the mural contest were Professor Ed Glynn of the Maryland College of Art and Design; Millie Schott of the Strathmore Hall Arts Center; Denise Kayser and Andi Rosati of the City of Gaithersburg Council of the Arts; and Thomas Whorton, Publications and Graphic Designer, Montgomery County Office of Public Information.
