Mock Trial to Examine Legal
Issues in Fair Housing
As part of National Fair Housing Month, the Montgomery County Human Relations Commission will sponsor a mock trial on Tuesday, April 24, at the Montgomery County Judicial Center, 50 Maryland Avenue, Rockville, in the third floor Ceremonial Courtroom. Sign-in and refreshments begin at a 6 p.m., followed by the trial at 6:30 p.m.
Judge Paul McGuckian will preside over the mock trial, which will examine the legal issues most often associated with fair housing, particularly the issue of occupancy standards and how they are often erroneously applied to HUD and Montgomery County Code guidelines.
During jury deliberations, a discussion of housing discrimination and housing issues will be presented. Three hours of continuing education credits will be offered for participants from the Maryland Real Estate Commission.
Co-sponsors of the trial include the Montgomery County Attorney’s Office, Department of Housing and Community Affairs, Commission on Common Ownership Communities, Apartment and Office Building Association, Rockville Human Rights Commission, Washington Metropolitan Chapter of the Community Association Institute, Housing Opportunities Commission, The Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The deadline for registration is April 17 and the cost is $10. For more information, or to register, call the Human Relations Commission at 240-777-8469.
