Pedestrian Safety Panel to Hold First Community Forum;
Panel Seeks Public Input And Ideas To Improve Safety

The Montgomery County Blue Ribbon Panel on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety invites the public to the first of two community forums designed to solicit ideas and concerns on improving pedestrian and traffic safety in the County. The first Community Forum on Pedestrian Safety will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2001, from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. at the East County Community Center, 3310 Gateshead Manor Way in Silver Spring.

Speakers will include County Executive Douglas M. Duncan, Maryland Transportation Secretary John Porcari, Washington State Traffic Safety Commission Director John Moffat, who is a nationally recognized expert in pedestrian-traffic safety, and Maryland Delegate William Bronrott of Bethesda, who chairs the pedestrian safety panel.

Duncan formed the Montgomery County Blue Ribbon Panel on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety last June in response to the rising number of pedestrian deaths and injuries in the County. The Panel will map out an action plan to reduce pedestrian deaths and injuries by addressing interrelated issues of education, enforcement, engineering design and laws. For more information about the forum or for special accommodations, call 301-986-4325 or 301-986-4327 (TDD), or visit the web site at www.co.mo.md.us.

If driving to the forum from I-495, take the Colesville Road (Route 29) exit north towards Columbia. Take a right onto Briggs Chaney Road. Turn left onto Gateshead Manor Way. The East County Community Center is on the left.
