County Executive Welcomes
Social & Scientific Systems
to Silver Spring
County Executive Douglas M. Duncan helped welcome Social & Scientific Systems, Inc., (SSS) to Silver Spring during an employee briefing held today at the Silver Spring Holiday Inn. SSS is consolidating it operations, currently in Bethesda, Rockville, and Gaithersburg, and moving its 280 employees to 8757 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.
“We are delighted that Social & Scientific Systems chose to consolidate in Silver Spring,” said Duncan. “Their move to Silver Spring illustrates the County’s commitment to helping businesses grow and succeed and SSS’ commitment to becoming another important part of Silver Spring’s re-emergence as a vital business and retail center.”
Social and Scientific System’s president and chief executive officer Mary Frances leMat signed the 88,000 square foot lease with building owner Atlantic Realty during this afternoon’s event. The company plans to move late this summer, when major renovations to the building are scheduled for completion.
“Since SSS moved to Montgomery County from the District over 20 years ago, our employees have been located in different offices throughout the county, said leMat.
“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to be together in one building – to truly be ‘one company’ – and to do so in Silver Spring, during the midst of its transformation back into one of the County’s most vibrant business, retail and residential hubs.”
The briefing also included a presentation about the revitalization of Silver Spring and the renovation of 8757 Georgia Avenue, which is adjacent to the Holiday Inn.
Major clients of SSS include Federal health care agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. SSS supports AIDS clinical trials programs, manages meetings and conferences worldwide, and provides statistical programming in support of healthcare policy and research. The company’s commercial information technology division, Infinibyte™, supports small and medium-sized enterprises in network design; voice and data cabling; desktop support; and sales, service, and repair of computers and peripherals.
In 1998, SSS started an Employee-Stock Ownership Program (ESOP). In 1999, the company was recognized as a “Great Place to Work” by the Montgomery Work/Life Alliance; the company again received the award in 2000, which was renamed the “Workplace Excellence Award.”
