Montgomery County Assumes Collection
of Recordation Taxes Beginning in FY 02
The Maryland General Assembly last year enacted legislation that will allow counties in the State of Maryland to collect recordation taxes from its residents, effective July 2, 2001. Collection of these taxes was previously handled by the Clerk of the Circuit Court and, by law, the State was authorized to retain a three percent administrative fee for collection of the tax, which in fiscal year 2000 amounted to more than $1 million.
“I applaud the work of our legislature in passing this bill,” said Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. “This legislation will provide Montgomery County with additional resources by avoiding this administrative fee.”
Effective July 2, anyone recording a deed or other instrument of writing should go to the County’s Treasury Division, located at 255 Rockville Pike, Suite L-12. For more information about this new legislation, or about the collection of recordation taxes, call the County’s Treasury Division at 240-777-8995.
