Women's Legislative Briefing
To feature EMILY's List president
As keynote speaker; plus legislative proposals
At state, federal levels
Proposed state and federal legislation of interest to women will be presented at the 21st Women's Legislative Briefing, to be held at the Natcher Center on the NIH campus in Bethesda, on February 4, from 12:30 to 5:45 p.m.
The keynote speaker will be Ellen Malcolm, president of EMILY's List, one of the organizations working to increase the number of women in public office.
In Montgomery County, 82 percent of registered women voters turned out to cast their votes in the recent presidential election. Despite their presence in high numbers at the polls, women constitute only a small percentage of those serving in elected office. In the United States Congress, 13 percent of U.S. Senators, 13 out of 100, and 14 percent of U.S. Representatives, 59 out of 435, are women. Yet proposed laws affecting women are considered daily by these august bodies, with so few women represented.
County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski will participate in the opening ceremonies, and Congresswoman Connie Morella will be the guest speaker at a reception following the program. County and state elected officials will be available for networking.
WJLA-TV anchor reporter Greta Kreuz will serve as mistress of ceremonies for the briefing.
Workshops will focus on the following legislative issues: Improving Women's Economic Well-Being, Keeping Women Safe, Protecting Women's and Children's Health, Lobbying Effectively for Women's Issues, and Ensuring Civil Rights. Hosted by the Montgomery County Commission for Women, the Legislative Briefing is co-sponsored by the Commissions for Women in Allegany County, Baltimore County, Calvert County, Charles County, Frederick County, Prince George's County, St. Mary's County and the State of Maryland, in addition to more than 50 women's and community organizations.
Pre-registration is available until February 1, 2001. Online registration is available by visiting www.emontgomery.org/wlb, or the Montgomery County Commission for Women's homepage at www.co.mo.md.us/cfw. On-site registration will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on the day of the briefing.
