Public Libraries Announce Winners
Of 50th Anniversary Photography Contest;
Winners to be Honored at Respective Branches

Six local residents have been named winners in the Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) 50th Anniversary Photography Contest, "Libraries Change Lives."

The contest provided library customers with the opportunity to share how libraries make a difference or impact their lives. A first- and second-place winner was selected in each of the following categories: age 12 and under; ages 13-18; and ages 19 and over.

Winners in the 12 and Under category were: First Prize, Laura Epstein, "Computers are Cool," Davis Library; Second Prize, Musa Coleman, "Musa's House," Silver Spring Library.

In the 13-18 year-old category, winners were: First Prize winner: Jeff Tang, "Future Scholar", Potomac Library; Second Prize: Lisa Dove, "Discovering the Joy of Reading," Olney Library.

Winners in the 19 year-old and over were: First Prize, Quentin Furlong, "Wise Young Girls," Noyes Children's Library; Second Prize, Enid Hodes, "The Secret Corner," Silver Spring.

"It is especially noteworthy that each winning entry depicts the importance of introducing the love for books, reading and using the library at an early age", said Harriet Henderson, MCPL director.

First- and second-place winners will receive $100 and $50 awards dollars, respectively, and will be recognized at their home libraries during the 50th Anniversary celebrations, as follows:

  • July 2, 1-3 p.m. -- Davis Library, First Prize winner, 12 and under category, Laura Epstein;

  • July 2, 2-4 p.m. -- Potomac Library, First Prize winner, 13-18 category, Jeff Tang;

  • July 2, 3 p.m. – Olney Library, Second Prize winner, 13-18 category, Lisa Dove;

  • July 3, 3 p.m. – Noyes Children’s Library, First Prize winner, 19 and over category, Quentin Furlong; and

  • July 14, 3:30 p.m. – Silver Spring Library, Second Prize winners, 12 and under category, Musa Coleman, and the 19 and over category, Enid Hodes.

    The anniversary celebration at the Silver Spring Library also will feature a Broadway and Patriotic Revue, presented by the Young Americans of Washington. An ice cream social will follow the program. The event is sponsored by Friends of the Silver Spring Library and the Silver Spring Library Advisory Committee.

    The winning photos will be available at all the winning libraries during the presentations. Following the individual recognition ceremonies, the photos will become part of a special anniversary photo exhibit that will be on display with the anniversary quilt.
