County Receives 19 NACO
Achievement Awards

This year, Montgomery County received 19 awards for outstanding programs from the National Association of Counties (NACO) and one award from the National Association of County Information Officers (NACIO).

Included in the NACO awards was a “Best of Category” award given to Fire and Rescue Services for its submission called, “Code Enforcement Night Team.” This additional category was initiated in 1998 to highlight the outstanding model programs submitted to the awards competition.

“Montgomery County should be proud of the programs and services it offers its citizens,” said Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. “They reflect the enthusiasm and commitment of our employees, and I’m pleased that NACO recognizes their efforts.”

The following departments and programs received awards:

• Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center – Customer Service Measures;

• Economic Development – Hispanic Business Institute;

• Environmental Protection – Countywide Forest Preservation Strategy; Environmental Assessment 2000; West Nile Virus Information Website; Consumer Education on Electricity Deregulation;

• Fire and Rescue Services – Code Enforcement Night Team;

• Health & Human Services – Crisis Response in the Schools: An Intragovernmental Partnership; SHARP Suspension Programs; Community Review Program; The Early Childhood Initiative Planning Group;

• Information Systems & Telecommunications – Surplus Radio Equipment Acquisition for Public Safety Services; Parking Services Web Site; Community Use of Public Facilities Ball Field Web Site;

• Permitting Services – Electronic Permitting;

• Public Information – Pedestrian Safety Campaign (NACIO Awards of Excellence);

• Public Works and Transportation – GPS Enhancement for Special Needs Collections; Design Standards for Open Section Roadways with Sidewalks and Off-Road Bike Paths; Ride On’s Student Ride Free Program; and

• Recreation – Rosemary Hills Community Center on the Move.
