Nominations Sought for
Annual County Transportation Awards;
Outstanding Promotion of Commuting Alternatives Will Be Recognized

The Montgomery County Department of Public Works and Transportation has issued a call for nominations of individuals, businesses, and organizations that have achieved impressive results in the promotion of commuting alternatives. Awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held in May during National Transportation Week.

Employers are eligible for awards that recognize existing commuter alternative programs that have achieved outstanding results, newly developed commuter programs, or that have an exceptional transit benefits coordinator.

Special honors recognize individuals or organizations that have achieved significant results or made consistent contributions to the advancement of commuting alternatives. Individuals are also recognized through such award categories as "Walker/Biker of the Year", "Ride On Rider of the Year," and "Transit Rider of the Year." Transit, carpool, vanpool, taxi and shuttle bus drivers may also be nominated for their professionalism and friendliness.

The nomination form is available by calling Montgomery County Commuter Services at 301-565-5889. Applications must be postmarked by 5 p.m. on February 16, 2001 and should be sent to the Montgomery County Department of Public Works and Transportation, Commuter Services Section, 8401 Colesville Road, Suite 150, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910.

Montgomery County actively supports commuting alternatives and encourages employers to become more involved in the commuting choices of employees. Commuter Services helps employees and residents develop their own carpools and vanpools, and it promotes use of the County's Ride On bus system, MARC trains, Metrobus and Metrorail, and walking, biking, telecommuting, and flextime to ease traffic congestion, lessen commuting stress, and improve air quality.

For more information, call Commuter Services at 301-770-POOL.
