Duncan Seeks Applicants For
County-wide Recreation Advisory Board

County Executive Douglas M. Duncan is seeking applicants to fill nine vacancies on the County-wide Recreation Advisory Board. Two of the vacancies are for alternate representatives. Terms for the vacancies may be for one, two or three years. Six incumbents are eligible to apply for reappointment. Individuals from the Silver Spring region are strongly encouraged to apply.

This board advises the County Executive, County Council, the Department of Recreation and the Planning Board on county recreation and park needs. The Board encourages the development of desirable parks and recreational opportunities, and advises and makes recommendations to appropriate officials on matters concerning budgets, recreation programs, services, and facilities.

Members serve without compensation. The board is composed of 24 members, including four alternates, and one representative from each of the five regional recreation advisory boards, and seven non-voting ex-officio members. Alternates serve in place of an absent member and assume a regular member's position if there is a resignation.

Meetings are held the first Monday of each month at the Department of Recreation’s Administrative Offices, 12210 Bushey Drive, Silver Spring. In addition, members serve on subcommittees that meet as needed.

Interested residents should apply by October 19 to County Executive Douglas M. Duncan at the Executive Office Building, 101 Monroe Street, Rockville, MD 20850. A brief resume, including work and home phone numbers, should be enclosed. Individuals representing minorities or special population groups are encouraged to apply. Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time.

Duncan's appointments are subject to confirmation by the County Council. Applications of those selected for appointment are made public as part of the confirmation process.
