Silver Spring Library
Celebrates 70 Years

The Silver Spring community is invited to celebrate the 70th birthday of the Silver Spring Library on October 20, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Festivities will include performances by the 2nd Story Band and Tappers with Attitude, as well as a children’s art contest and displays on the library’s past, present and future. Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and County Council President Blair Ewing will make brief remarks prior to cutting the birthday cake.

The 2nd Story Band has entertained extensively in the metropolitan area, in New York City, and as far away as St. Croix. Members have performed with the Charlie Byrd Trio. The band and its vocalist, Megan Lane, have been nominated for the Washington Area Music Association Wammie award that recognizes significant career achievements by area musicians.

Tappers with Attitude, a jazz group of performers ranging in ages from 8 to 18, will perform pieces by major choreographers. Some former members have gone on to successful professional dance careers. For example, Baakari Wilder starred in Broadway’s award-winning Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk. The group also has been featured in the Smithsonian Magazine, and The Washington Post has called their performances “invigorating” and “deeply inspirational.”

Awards will be presented to the winners of the children’s art contest, “The Library of the Future,” and all the artwork will be on display at the library.

The birthday celebration is sponsored by the Silver Spring Friends of the Library and the Library Advisory Committee.

The library is located at 8901 Colesville Road in Silver Spring. For more information, call 301-565-7689.
