Duncan Seeks Applicants for
Historic Preservation Commission

County Executive Douglas M. Duncan is seeking applicants to fill four vacancies on the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission. Three incumbents are eligible to apply for reappointment.

The nine-member commission is responsible for approving historic area work permits and for recommending historic sites and historic districts to the Planning Board and County Council for placement on the Master Plan for Historic Preservation.

Applicants should have expertise in the field of history, architecture, preservation, or urban design, or should represent a special geographic area, or a social, economic or cultural interest in the County. Owners of historic homes or residents of historic districts are also encouraged to apply.

Meetings are usually held the second and fourth Wednesday evening of each month in Silver Spring. Commissioners may be required to represent the Commission at Planning Board and County Council hearings and to visit various historic districts during business hours and on weekends. Members serve approximately 40 hours per month. Members do not receive compensation, but may be reimbursed for travel and dependent care expenses.

County residents must apply in writing by November 9 to County Executive Douglas M. Duncan at the Executive Office Building, 101 Monroe Street, Rockville, MD 20850. Applicants should enclose a resume that includes home and work telephone numbers and that reflects their qualifications in at least one of the areas of expertise required. Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time.

Interested applicants who would like more information about the Commission may contact Gwen Wright at 301-563-3400.

Duncan’s appointments are subject to confirmation by the County Council. Applications of those selected for appointment are made public as part of the confirmation process.
