Poolesville Library Re-opens
After Major Expansion
After a three-month, $125,500 expansion, the Poolesville Library re-opened today with a ribbon cutting and greetings from local elected and Montgomery County Public Library officials.
At the opening ceremonies celebrating the larger, more spacious library, Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan was joined by Poolesville's town commissioners Eddie Kuhlman, Tom Dillingham, and Roy Johnson, Barnesville Mayor Elizabeth Tolbert, Montgomery County Public Libraries Director Harriet Henderson and other community representatives.
Commenting on the importance of libraries to communities, Duncan said, "Today, as we celebrate the re-opening of this larger library, we write a new page in the history of Poolesville."
In 1978, when the facility in Poolesville opened, it was known as the Western County Library and was housed in the Poolesville Junior/Senior High School. The school and public library materials shared shelf space in the school Media Center, and patrons could access materials after school and on weekends. During this time, the name was changed to the Poolesville Library.
In 1991, thanks to strong community support, the library was moved to its current store front location on Fisher Avenue in the Poolesville Towne Center. After nearly a decade at the site, space became available in the adjoining storefront.
Months of planning, followed by three months of actual work, which closed the library, have resulted not only in additional space, but new carpet and paint, a new meeting room, more tables and chairs, and a larger children's area. Collections have been consolidated and shelving has been removed from the vestibule. The library also houses space for a satellite office of the Upcounty Regional Services Center.
The Agency Manager is Mark Gochnour. Hours for the Poolesville Library are: Monday-Wednesday, 2 to 9 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
