County Opens 6th District Police Station;
Improves Service to Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village Area
Montgomery County's 6th District Police Substation officially opened today, beefing up service to the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village communities by improving response time and strengthening community policing efforts in an area that was previously served by the larger 5th District Station-Germantown.
The new 8,070 square-foot substation is located at 18749F North Frederick Avenue (Rt. 355) in Gaithersburg, adjacent to the intersection with Professional Drive. It will house 76 police officers -- headed by Lt. Deirdre Walker as commander of the new 6th District - along with a civilian staff of eight. The substation will be open to the public seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.
"I have been committed to expanding police services in the upcounty since first taking office, and I am pleased that we are meeting that commitment today," said County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. "The 5th District was far too large to allow for an effective community policing strategy, and there was a need to improve response times in an area that covered roughly half the County."
"This substation allows for a more substantive and efficient method of service delivery, and it enables our officers to better understand the needs of the communities and the neighborhoods they serve," said Police Chief Charles A. Moose. "Our community policing effort can now function more effectively in the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village area, and this is good for officers and citizens alike."
The new 6th District-Montgomery Village/Gaithersburg Substation currently houses patrol officers and civilian staff, but it is expected to expand within the next five years to a full district station, including traffic officers, special assignment teams and crime analysis staff.
