Board of Elections Appoints Harris
As Acting Director; Goehler Retires
The Montgomery County Board of Elections has appointed Sara Harris as the Board's Acting Election Director. The former director, Richard G. Goehler, retired effective December 31, 2000.
Goehler announced his retirement shortly after the November 2000 General Election. He came to the Board of Elections in 1992 as its Deputy Director, after serving as a career officer in the U.S. Air Force. He was appointed Election Director in January 2000, after the retirement of his predecessor, Carol S. Evans.
"Rick did a wonderful job in making sure the 2000 elections ran smoothly, including the special election in County Council District 1," stated Board President Susan E. Bratten. "The Board wishes him a long and happy retirement."
Harris has served in various positions with the Board since 1986, most recently as Deputy Director. She is the Secretary of the Maryland Association of Election Officials (MAEO) and serves on a number of election task forces concerning accessibility for people with disabilities.
The Board of Elections will select a permanent replacement for Richard Goehler following a recruitment process by the County's Office of Human Resources.
