Help Needed For Earth Month;
Upper Patuxent Watershed Clean-Up

Residents interested in protecting local water quality are invited to help clean up the Upper Patuxent River on Saturday April 7, 2001. The annual clean-up is sponsored by the Izaak Walton League of America Wildlife Achievement Chapter (WAC) as part of its long-term commitment to resource conservation.

The clean-up will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the WAC Headquarters on Mullinix Mill Road in Damascus. Parking and water will be available on the site, and the WAC will provide lunch at noon for all participants. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and are asked to bring rakes and shovels. Gloves will be provided.

This year's clean-up is part of a series of Patuxent watershed "Earth Month" activities designed to increase environmental awareness and citizen stewardship. The month will end with a "Watershed Stewardship Day" at the Brighton Dam Ranger Station on Saturday, April 28th. This event will feature a tour of Brighton Dam and exhibits and demonstrations on how to protect our natural resources.

To volunteer for the clean-up or find out more about WAC, call Ed Burrows at 301-774-9090. For more information about other planned Earth Month activities, contact Meo Curtis, Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection at 240-777-7711, or check the County's website in March at www.askDEP.com.
