County Seeks Applicants for Local
Emergency Planning Council for
Hazardous Materials

Citizens, business representatives and others interested in how hazardous materials information is collected and coordinated -- as required by federal, state and local laws -- are encouraged to apply for membership on the Montgomery County Local Emergency Planning Council (LEPC) for Hazardous Materials.

The 23-member planning council advises the County Executive on matters pertaining to hazardous materials. The group also reviews annually the County's Hazardous Materials Response Plan, regulates hazardous materials at the local level, makes recommendations on training of emergency personnel, and ensures citizen access to hazardous materials information from regulated facilities.

Vacancies currently exist on the council for representatives of: a community or citizens association; a hospital; a small business; an automotive sector business; a utility company; a SARA regulated industry; a high-tech industry; a federal installation; a municipality; and a high use regulated industry.

Meetings -- which are open to the public and interested parties -- are held quarterly in Rockville, usually on the third Thursday of the month, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Emergency Operations Center, Room 101, Stella B. Werner Council Office Building, 100 Maryland Avenue. Members serve two-year terms without compensation.

Interested persons should submit an application form and a brief letter, detailing any relevant experience and describing why they are interested in serving on the planning council. The deadline is March 21, 2001. Members are recommended by the County Executive and appointed by the Governor.

Application forms are available from the Office of Emergency Management, 100 Maryland Avenue, Room 220, Rockville, MD 20850. For more information, call the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management at 240-777-2300.
