Wheaton to Host Meeting on
Pedestrian Safety

Montgomery County’s Wheaton Redevelopment Office and the Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee, will co-host a meeting on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m., regarding pedestrian safety. The meeting will be held at Crossway Community, 3015 Upton Street, Wheaton. The community is invited for pizza at 7 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

State Delegate William Bronrott, Chair of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety, will be on hand to discuss the Panel’s recently released Interim Report. Copies of the report are available by calling the Mid-County Regional Services Center at 240-777-8100 or by clicking on the Pedestrian and Traffic Safety icon on the County’s homepage: www.co.mo.md.us. Some of the recommendations found in this report are reflected in County Executive Douglas M. Duncan’s FY 2002 operating budget.

“For the past five years, pedestrian fatalities in the County have exceeded the number of homicides during the same time period,” said Duncan. “These tragedies can and must be prevented, and we are taking even more aggressive measures to make our streets safer.”

Pedestrian safety and pedestrian access are priorities for Wheaton’s redevelopment plans, and these issues have been highlighted in the design scenarios of the Main Street Focus group process. Four of these design scenarios were recently presented to the community at a town meeting. Copies of the Main Street report and recommendations are available at the Mid-County Services Center, 2424 Reedie Drive, and at the Wheaton Redevelopment Office, 11501 Georgia Avenue. Copies can also be obtained on the County’s homepage: www.co.mo.md.us/services/regional/midcnty/.
